Joseph Le Conte Middle is a Los Angeles Unified public school in Hollywood serving 627 students in grades 6–8. Its 2025–2026 results show improvement in some subjects, but proficiency remains below the district and state in English language arts (ELA), math, and science. The central concern is that students are behind in all three subjects, with particularly low results in math and science.

Compared with the five nearby Los Angeles Unified middle schools with results for the same year, Le Conte ranked last in ELA and science and second-lowest in math; only Young Oak Kim Academy was lower in math. Le Conte had 37% proficiency in ELA, 23% in math, and 18% in science, versus nearby-school averages of 43%, 39%, and 33%. SchoolDigger raised Le Conte’s ranking from the 20th percentile and 1 star in 2023–2024 to the 31st percentile and 2 stars in 2025–2026, though it remained lowest among the five nearby schools with rankings. Its 2024–2025 student–teacher ratio was 16 students per teacher, lower than the nearby-school average of 20. Le Conte reported 95% free/reduced lunch eligible in 2024–2025, the second-highest rate among nine nearby schools with the same measure; this is context, not an explanation for results. SchoolDigger’s statewide rankings also differed by student group: African American students ranked at the 82nd percentile, compared with 31st overall; Special Education students ranked at the 64th percentile.

I am sixty-six years old and grew up right behind Le Conte middle school. We, along with several of our neighbors, were forced to sell our homes through eminent domain so that Le Conte could expand their property. All of our neighborhood history and culture abandoned for this??? You should be ashamed of yourselves.
