Summary

Joseph Le Conte Middle is a public school serving about 627 students in grades 6-8 in Hollywood, part of the Los Angeles Unified district, where it faces significant academic challenges with proficiency rates in English, Math, and Science that are well below both district and state averages.

When compared to other middle schools in the area, Joseph Le Conte consistently underperforms. For example, nearby schools like Thomas Starr King Middle School Film and Media Magnet and John Burroughs Middle show significantly higher proficiency rates, and charter options like Magnolia Science Academy 6 also outperform it academically. A major differentiator is chronic absenteeism; at 26.6%, Joseph Le Conte has a much higher rate of students missing school than schools like Young Oak Kim Academy (11.7%), which correlates with weaker academic results.

Despite receiving more funding per student than several higher-performing schools and having a favorable student-to-teacher ratio, these resources have not translated into better outcomes. The school's performance has remained stagnant over the past decade, while some nearby schools with similar student populations have shown improvement, indicating that factors like school leadership, teaching quality, and effective programs are critical for student success.

Open Quote I am sixty-six years old and grew up right behind Le Conte middle school. We, along with several of our neighbors, were forced to sell our homes through eminent domain so that Le Conte could expand their property. All of our neighborhood history and culture abandoned for this??? You should be ashamed of yourselves. This is what your illegal immigrant policy has brought to what use to be our beautiful home and neighborhood. Shameful. https://www.schooldigger.com/go/CA/schools/2271003129/school.aspx Close Quote
