Summary:

ZIP code 90028 has eight schools serving elementary through high school: three elementary schools, one middle school and four high schools; seven are in Los Angeles Unified, while Citizens of the World is in its own district. The 2025–26 results show schools with very different strengths, and the most important finding is the wide gap between the highest and lowest results: as much as 59 percentage points in English language arts (ELA).

Different schools lead in different subjects. Hollywood Senior High had the area’s highest 2025–26 ELA proficiency, 66%, compared with 49% statewide; STEM Academy at Bernstein High led science at 39%, above the state’s 36%; and Grant Elementary led math at 43%, with Cheremoya Avenue Elementary close behind at 42%. At the other end, Richard A. Alonzo Community Day had the lowest results in all three subjects: 7% in ELA, 15% in math and 8% in science. Helen Bernstein High also lagged Hollywood Senior in ELA by 44 points, despite similar free/reduced lunch eligible shares in 2024–25: 93% and 93%, respectively.

Math showed the clearest relative progress: the average for the same seven schools rose 6 points from 2024–25 to 2025–26, narrowing the gap with the state by 5 points. The ELA average slipped 1 point, while science rose 2 points but fell further behind the state. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile improved from 2023–24 to 2025–26 at Cheremoya (38 to 54) and STEM Academy (57 to 66), while Hollywood Senior’s percentile fell from 77 in 2024–25 to 64 in 2025–26. Attendance is another consideration: all seven schools with 2025–26 chronic-absence figures exceeded the state’s 18% rate, ranging from 23% at STEM Academy to 69% at Alonzo. Across all eight schools, 2024–25 free/reduced lunch eligible shares ranged from 60% at Citizens of the World to 98% at STEM Academy; these figures provide context, not an explanation for school results. The year-to-year test comparison includes seven schools because Citizens of the World has no 2025–26 results in the supplied data.
