Summary

George Ellery Hale Charter Academy is a large, well-regarded middle school (grades 6-8) serving over 1,600 students in Woodland Hills, part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, and it has consistently earned high state rankings for over a decade while serving a socioeconomically diverse community.

The school's academic performance is a significant strength, with student proficiency in English, Math, and Science notably exceeding both district and state averages. What truly sets Hale apart is its effectiveness in supporting all students; it achieves exceptional results with African American, Hispanic, and low-income student groups, ranking them in the 80th to 95th percentiles statewide. Furthermore, the school manages this with strong attendance rates and at a lower per-student cost than several nearby schools like Canoga Park Middle and Woodland Hills Academy, which spend thousands more.

Within its local context, Hale stands out as a high performer. It significantly outranks other traditional Los Angeles Unified middle schools such as Ernest Lawrence Middle and John A. Sutter Middle. While schools in more affluent neighboring districts like Medea Creek Middle (in Oak Park Unified) may have higher test scores, they serve far fewer students in need, making Hale's consistent top-tier performance with a diverse population particularly commendable.

Open Quote My son has been attending Hale for two years and it has been the worst experience of our lives. They constantly harass my son unnecessarily. He has been racial Profiled and discriminated against. The counseling office is the worst. They allowed another student to continue to call my son derogatory names and made excuses for the other student. This is unacceptable. They constantly pull my son out of class and search his belongings like he’s Some sort of criminal. And 99 of the time my child has been falsely accused with no apologies. Close Quote
