Summary

Woodlake Elementary Community Charter is a K-5 public school serving 561 students in Woodland Hills, part of the Los Angeles Unified school district, and it consistently earns a 4-star rating, performing above both district and state averages in all core subjects.

The school stands out for achieving strong academic results while serving a student population with greater economic needs than many top-performing neighbors like Woodland Hills Elementary Charter for Enriched Studies or Calabash Charter Academy. It shows particular effectiveness in supporting students from low-income families and those in special education. However, a significant challenge is its high chronic absenteeism rate, which is notably greater than at these higher-ranked nearby schools and is an important area for improvement.

When compared to other local charter schools, Woodlake holds a solid middle position, outperforming others such as Enadia Way Technology Charter while operating with moderate per-student spending. Performance dips in 5th-grade math and science suggest a focus area, but the school's stable trajectory and efficient use of resources make it a relative strength within its district.

Open Quote This school focuses on more than just Math and English Language Arts test scores. There is a strong technology program that focuses on more than just typing, but also coding, movie making and editing, and research. It has a hands-on science program that includes classrooms planting, caring for, and harvesting food and flowers, making compost out of lunch trash to support the garden, caring for chickens to keep pest population down, maintaining a butterfly garden, growing silk worms, collecting and sorting recycling, class assignments to make art and usable things out of trash and recycling, etc. It has a leadership program that includes a student government, student run giving programs, and encouragement of individual service learning projects. It has an art program that includes school plays, ballroom dancing, choir, orchestra, and a fine arts program. The kids are getting a well-rounded education that will serve them well in life, rather than being treated as test-score machines, and I love that. Close Quote
