Lakewood High serves 2,305 students in grades 9–12 in Lakewood, California, as part of the Long Beach Unified area. Its 2025–2026 English results were close to state levels, but graduation and attendance tell different stories: graduation was above state and district rates, while chronic absenteeism remained high. The clearest concern is math, where proficiency was 14%—far below the state’s 38% and the district’s 40%.

English is Lakewood’s strongest subject relative to the state and district: all-grades proficiency was 49.2%, nearly matching the state’s 49.3%, though below the district’s 51%. But Lakewood did not lead nearby schools: its 11th-grade English rate was 49%, versus a nearby-school average of 55%, and six of eight schools scored higher. Math was also weak among nearby schools: Lakewood’s 11th-grade rate of 14% was below the nearby average of 27% and higher than only two of the eight schools. Science proficiency was 17%, compared with 36% statewide and 31% in the district; among six nearby schools with exact 12th-grade results, Lakewood ranked fourth. Graduation is a bright spot at 94%, above the state’s 88% and district’s 91%, while chronic absenteeism was 29%, higher than the state’s 18% and district’s 25%.

Over time, English improved from 44% in 2022–2023 to 49% in 2025–2026, bringing it close to the state rate. Math slipped from 15% to 14%, and its state gap widened; science rose from 15% to 17%, but also fell further behind the state as that benchmark increased. Its student-teacher ratio was 21.4 in 2024–2025, fifth among the nine schools, and 58% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible that year.
