Summary:

ZIP code 90703 has 18 schools—10 elementary, three middle and five high schools—with 17 reporting 2025–26 test scores. Across those scored schools, average proficiency was 68% in ELA, 58% in math and 53% in science, above state figures of 49%, 38% and 36%. But school results vary widely, making individual school differences more important than the ZIP-code averages.

Whitney (Gretchen) High is the clear academic leader: it scored 99% in both ELA and math and 98% in science, leading Tracy (Wilbur) High (Continuation), the lowest school in all three subjects, by 84, 96 and 92 percentage points, respectively. Among elementary schools, Leal (Frank C.) Elementary led ELA and math at 86% and 86%; Wittmann (Helen) Elementary led elementary science at 80%. Carmenita Middle led middle schools in ELA, math and science, while Haskell (Pliny Fisk) Middle had the lowest middle-school math and science results. SchoolDigger ranked Whitney #4 of 2,137 high schools in 2025–26; Leal ranked #52 of 5,804 elementary schools and Carmenita #148 of 2,703 middle schools. All-grades comparisons span different grade levels, and ABC Secondary (Alternative) has no current test scores.

On average, the schools’ advantage over state proficiency narrowed from the prior year by about 3 points in ELA, 2 in math and 4 in science, even as some schools improved. Gahr (Richard) High gained 10 points in ELA, 11 in math and 11 in science, while Haskell gained 5, 7 and 10 points, respectively; Cerritos High fell 10 points in ELA, 14 in math and 10 in science. The 2024–25 free/reduced lunch eligible measure provides context, not an explanation: Leal reported 35% eligible and scored 86% in ELA, compared with 73% eligible and 41% in ELA at Juarez (Benito) Elementary, though comparisons do not follow a perfect pattern. Attendance also differs: chronic absenteeism was 5% at Whitney and 72% at Tracy, against 18% statewide.
