Summary

Andrew P. Hill High is a public high school in San Jose serving 1,564 students in grades 9–12, in the East Side Union High district. Its strongest subject is English language arts (ELA), while math results are much weaker. Attendance is a major concern: chronic absenteeism was 33% in 2025–2026, compared with 18% statewide and 24% in the district; among six nearby schools with data, only Gunderson High had a higher rate.

ELA is a relative bright spot: 54% of students met proficiency in 2025–2026, the third-highest result among six nearby high schools with scores. That was 5 percentage points above the state’s 49% but 7 points below the district’s 61%. Math proficiency was 18%, ranking fifth among those six nearby schools and trailing the state by 21 points and the district by 20. Science proficiency was 28%, above the nearby-school average but below the state’s 36%. Overall, the school’s ELA result does not reflect its substantial math challenge.

Scores have risen since 2022–2023: ELA improved by 7 percentage points, math by 3 and science by 8. However, the math gap with the state widened slightly rather than closing. SchoolDigger ranks the school in the 47th percentile statewide, with 2 stars; among seven nearby schools ranked that year, it sits fourth. The student-teacher ratio was 21.3 in 2024–2025. That year, 68% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible; this is an eligibility measure, not a measure of access to meals, since California students receive free school meals. SchoolDigger’s student-group rankings show a relative strength for English Language Learner Students: 75th percentile in 2023–2024, compared with 49th for the school overall. Its ranking for Special Education Students fell from the 68th percentile in 2023–2024 to the 25th in 2025–2026, while the overall ranking was 47th that year. Graduation was 83% in 2025–2026, below the state’s 88% but above the district’s 81%.

Open Quote As the grandparent on one of your students, I have noticed how little care has been given to a student who 'just doesn't get it" in two of your classes. No one went the extra mile to keep this student from slowly falling behind. Close Quote

Open Quote I love the responsible teachers here. They are just awesome. I feel safe being at school. The campus is nice and green. Classrooms are neat and equipped.
However, the academic standard is not so high due to the irregular ability of students although the teachers are very professional and they always try their own best. Close Quote
