Summary

Christopher Elementary is a K–8 school in San Jose serving 446 students in the Oak Grove Elementary District. Its 2025–26 all-grade proficiency was below California and district results in English language arts (ELA), math, and science. It also ranked near the bottom of nearby schools with same-year scores: second-lowest in ELA and science, and third-lowest in math. The most important finding is that achievement is low across all three core subjects, especially compared with state and district results.

Third-grade ELA is a bright spot: about 44% of students were proficient, the highest result among the school and seven nearby schools with comparable data, and about 3 points above the district. All-grade Spanish-assessment listening also stood out, at 32%, versus 27% in the district and 24% statewide. But this strength does not extend to other subjects or Spanish-assessment areas. Grades four through six are a recurring concern: ELA proficiency fell to 20% in grade four and about 15% in grades five and six, while grade-six math was below every nearby school with same-year data.

ELA has improved over time, rising from 18% in 2022–23 to 27% in 2025–26, and its gap with the state narrowed by 6 points. Math and science gains were smaller—about 2 points each—and their gaps with the state widened; math also declined from its 2024–25 high. SchoolDigger rated Christopher at the 14th percentile, with 1 star, in 2025–26, compared with the district’s 57th percentile and 3 stars. Its 2024–25 student-teacher ratio was 21.4. In that school year, 64% of students were eligible for free/reduced lunch, below the nearby-school average of 69%; these figures provide context, not an explanation for results. Chronic absenteeism has fallen from 45% in 2021–22 to 20% in 2025–26, but remains above the state’s 18% and the district’s 16%. SchoolDigger’s 2023–24 statewide ranking for English Language Learner Students was at the 31st percentile, notably above the school’s overall 4th-percentile ranking. Its Female Students ranking also rose from the 1st percentile in 2023–24 to the 21st in 2025–26.
