Summary

Gunderson High is a public high school serving about 744 students in grades 9-12 within the San Jose Unified district, currently ranked in the 36th percentile statewide with a 2-star rating for the 2024-2025 school year.

The school faces significant academic challenges, with proficiency rates in core subjects like math (15.76%) and English (37.43%) well below district and state averages, and it struggles with a high chronic absenteeism rate of 34%. Despite these academic metrics, Gunderson High maintains a strong graduation rate of 91.7%. An interesting comparison is with nearby Pioneer High, another school in the same district located just 1.71 miles away, which achieves much higher academic results and lower absenteeism while receiving over $4,000 less funding per student.

Performance has been volatile in recent years, and there are notable differences in how the school serves various student groups. The school's situation suggests that improvement is possible, with key opportunities being to address chronic absenteeism, learn from higher-performing neighbors like Pioneer High, and strengthen support in foundational subjects like mathematics.
