Summary

Brookhurst Junior High is a public middle school serving about 725 students in grades 7 and 8 within the Anaheim Union High district, which faces significant academic challenges across its schools.

Academic performance at Brookhurst is among the lowest in the state, with fewer than 20% of students proficient in English and fewer than 13% proficient in math, a trend that has worsened over the past decade. The school also struggles with very high chronic absenteeism, affecting nearly one in three students. While Brookhurst spends more per student than many nearby schools, these resources have not translated into stronger outcomes. Notably, the school shows some relative effectiveness in supporting homeless students and English Learners, suggesting some programs are working.

Comparisons with nearby schools reveal stark differences based on district boundaries. For example, D. Russell Parks Junior High in the Fullerton Elementary district, just a few miles away, has proficiency rates more than three times higher and much lower absenteeism. Within its own district, Brookhurst performs similarly to schools like Sycamore Junior High and Ball Junior High, but lags behind others such as Orangeview Junior High. A concerning internal pattern shows 8th graders performing significantly worse than 7th graders, indicating potential issues with academic progression.
