Summary

Nicolas Junior High is a public middle school serving about 540 students in grades 7 and 8 within the Fullerton Elementary district, which is generally above average in the state, but the school itself faces significant academic challenges while serving a community with high economic need.

Academically, the school's test scores in English, math, and science are notably lower than the district average and those of nearby schools like D. Russell Parks Junior High and Ladera Vista Junior High School of the Arts. Math proficiency, at 19.5%, is a particular area of concern. However, the school has made impressive progress in improving student attendance, now boasting a chronic absenteeism rate better than the state average and lower than Ladera Vista. It also shows relative strengths in supporting English Language Learners and has seen recent dramatic improvement in services for students in special education.

When compared to schools in neighboring districts like Anaheim Union High, Nicolas often performs better than schools with similar student populations, such as South Junior High or Sycamore Junior High. A key point for parents is that the school spends more per student than its higher-performing district peers, yet these resources have not yet translated into equivalent academic results, indicating the school is working to address complex needs within its community.

Open Quote Unfortunately, I have to report this school is poorly run. They lack the proper resources to support the students/families they serve (teachers always asking for supplies). Most students are testing 2/3 grades BELOW their present grade levels. The new principal (less than six months of ever being principal) is pretty green. Lacks proper leadership skills to support her team, team seems fragmented and mostly agitated. The new AP also new and lacks connectives w/students and teachers. The school is 85 Hispanic blue collar working folks (2/3 jobs). The Principal, AP and Special Education team are not able to communicate nor are culturally sensitive to the families or students they serve, only two front office clerks speak Spanish. I have many of my friends who go there too and have TRANSFERRED to another school out b/c they don't feel welcome or leadership team lacks culture sensitivity. I was in a IEP and the AP was not helpful and very rude. Close Quote
