Summary:

Bloomington has nine public schools in Colton Joint Unified: five elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools, including a continuation high school. In 2025–2026, the simple average across the nine schools was 32% proficient in English language arts, 20% in math and 19% in science, compared with state results of 49%, 38% and 36%. The averages were 17 percentage points below the state in ELA, 18 points in math and 17 in science. The clearest takeaway is that results vary substantially between schools, while the area’s average trails the state in all three subjects, most in math.

Ruth Grimes Elementary leads the elementary schools in ELA and math, with 49% and 32% proficient; its ELA result is within 1 point of the state. Crestmore Elementary leads elementary science at 34%. Among the middle schools, Ruth O. Harris Middle is higher in ELA than Joe Baca—29% versus 26%—while Joe Baca leads in math and science. Bloomington High leads the two high schools in all three subjects, ahead of Slover Mountain High (Continuation) by 24 points in ELA, 9 in math and 19 in science. Bloomington High also reports a 98% graduation rate, compared with 75% at Slover Mountain and 88% statewide.

Recent changes are mixed: the nine-school average rose 1 point in ELA, less than the state’s increase of 1 point; it rose less in math (less than 1 point versus 1 point statewide) and science (2 points versus 3). Gerald A. Smith Elementary improved in all three subjects, while Bloomington High’s ELA and math results fell 10 and 5 points. SchoolDigger’s three-year statewide rankings put Ruth Grimes at the 50th percentile, the highest among elementary schools; Walter Zimmerman Elementary fell from the 28th to the 16th percentile, while Crestmore rose from the 33rd to the 43rd. Reported free/reduced lunch eligibility in 2024–2025 ranged from 82% at Slover Mountain to 93% at Mary B. Lewis Elementary; ratios ranged from 12.5 students per teacher at Slover Mountain to 24.4 at Crestmore. All Grades comparisons combine schools serving different grade spans and programs.
