Summary

Legacy Traditional School - Surprise is a public charter elementary school serving 1,868 students in grades K-8 in Surprise, Arizona, within the Dysart Unified District. The school consistently ranks among the top 20-25% of elementary schools in the state, with a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger in recent years.

Legacy Traditional School - Surprise demonstrates strong academic performance, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics significantly higher than the state averages across all grade levels. For example, in 2024-2025, the school's 3rd grade ELA proficiency is 51% compared to the state's 36%, and its 3rd grade Math proficiency is 64% compared to the state's 42%. The school also outperforms the nearby Dysart Unified District schools in academic achievement.

While the school's Asian, African American, Native American, and Military Connected student subgroups all rank in the top 10-20% of their respective subgroups statewide, the school's Hispanic and White student subgroups perform relatively lower, ranking in the 40-50% range among their peers. Additionally, the school has experienced higher dropout rates compared to the state average, ranging from 2.4% to 6.1% in recent years. The school's lower percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch and its relatively low per-student spending suggest it may be serving a more advantaged student population, which warrants further examination to ensure equitable access and support for all students.

Open Quote When Legacy first opened it was everything we wanted. Small class sizes, back to school basic teaching etc.... over the past year and a half that has changed significantly. The classes are almost maxed out with 30-34 students (the school in general is maxed out at being as big as a HS) Specials teachers share a room and have to push a cart into classes) The kids get about 10 min to eat lunch if that. By the time they get in the cafeteria there are so many kids per grade level it takes forever to get through the lunch line. At recess the little kids are supposed to be on one side and bigger kids to the other, they end up mixing and the littles get pushed around or hear inappropriate things. I personally like being a part of a PTA so I know where raised money is going. Legacy has a PVO and it is not shared with families where or how much money there is. We were told each grade level would get 1 paid field trip per year, but twice my kids have either have had a field trip at the school or we had to pay for it. You get a feel that many students and parents feel entitled about going to Legacy, the parents pages are filled with many issues about, bullying ,theft, kids who should have been kicked out still there years later (so much for their zero tolerance policy) parents in general being rude to each other in driveline etc....

The one great thing about Legacy are the teachers. They have some gems there. but if you try to get out of your contract they want $5000 RED FLAG Close Quote
