Summary

Westwind School For Performing Arts School is a small, specialized middle school in North Little Rock, AR, serving just 86 students in grades 6-8 and operating as its own single-school district.

This school stands out for its extremely small size and a very low student-teacher ratio of 7.7:1, which is among the lowest in the area and suggests a highly personalized learning environment. It also spends a significant amount per student—$16,112 annually—which is higher than many nearby schools, including Maumelle Charter Middle School ($10,875) and Estem Junior High Public Charter School ($12,641). However, despite these investments, academic performance in core subjects is a major concern. Only 22.6% of students are proficient in Math and 30.1% in English Language Arts, both well below the state average. This performance is more comparable to other struggling local schools, like Maumelle Middle School, than to high-performing charters. The school’s state ranking has also declined, dropping from the 37th to the 25th percentile in the last year.

There is one notable bright spot: in 8th Grade Science, 52.4% of students are proficient, which is significantly higher than the state average (42.9%) and outperforms every nearby school, including the high-performing Pinnacle View Middle School (48.5%). This suggests that the arts-focused curriculum may be effectively integrated with science instruction at this grade level, or that a particularly strong teacher is in place. Overall, Westwind offers a unique, arts-centered environment with small classes, but families should be aware that its academic outcomes are low and declining, with the exception of 8th-grade science.

Open Quote As a parent, I truly wanted Westwind School for Performing Arts to be a good fit for my child, but our experience was difficult. Communication from the school was inconsistent, and frequent venue events (which made me very uncomfortable) disrupted learning, forcing classes to double up and students to eat lunch wherever they could. When I voiced concerns, I was met with defensiveness, which made the environment feel toxic and unwelcoming. The school was understaffed, with constant turnover, and it often felt like appearances mattered more than education. So, I pulled my child. I do not recommend this school. Close Quote
