Summary

GW Long Elementary School in Skipperville, AL, is a PK-6 school serving 492 students in the Dale County district, and it has become one of the top-performing elementary schools in the state.

This school is a standout academic performer. In the most recent rankings, GW Long placed 73rd out of 686 elementary schools in Alabama, putting it in the 89th percentile statewide. That's a remarkable jump from just a few years ago, when it ranked 218th. Your child will be well ahead of state averages in every subject. For example, in 5th grade math, 80.3% of students are proficient, compared to just 39% statewide. Even in 6th grade, where scores dip slightly, proficiency rates are still 26 percentage points above the state average. The school also excels in English, with proficiency rates 13 to 18 points higher than the state average in every grade. What's especially impressive is that this high achievement is consistent across all student groups—girls, boys, and students from low-income backgrounds all rank in the 86th to 92nd percentile nationally, meaning socioeconomic status is not a barrier to success here.

Compared to nearby schools, GW Long is in a league of its own. It outperforms the next-best local option, Newton Elementary School, by 94 ranking positions, and it's a staggering 544 positions ahead of Barbour County Intermediate School. The school also does more with less, spending just $7,786 per student—the lowest among its peers—while achieving the highest results. Additionally, chronic absenteeism has plummeted from 18.4% to just 6.7% in two years, well below the state average. This improvement in attendance goes hand-in-hand with the school's academic rise, showing a clear commitment to getting every child to school and learning.
