Summary

A M Windham Elementary School in Daleville, AL, serves 507 students from Pre-K through 4th grade and is part of the Daleville City district, which ranks in the bottom 20% of Alabama districts.

This school faces significant academic challenges, particularly in mathematics. In the most recent school year, only about 19% of 3rd graders and 20% of 4th graders were proficient in math, compared to state averages of roughly 45% and 42%, respectively. This represents a dramatic decline from just three years ago when math proficiency was near the state average. English Language Arts performance is comparatively stronger, with 4th grade reading proficiency (56%) approaching the state average (60%). When looking at nearby schools, the contrast is stark—Wicksburg Elementary, just 7.6 miles away, achieves 94% proficiency in 3rd grade math. Even Harrand Creek Elementary, which serves a similar percentage of students from low-income households (78% vs. 76% here), outperforms A M Windham in most subjects and ranks in the 52nd percentile statewide compared to this school's 24th percentile.

There are some positive signs worth noting. The school has made remarkable progress in reducing chronic absenteeism, cutting the rate from 26.5% to 13.8% over two years—now only slightly above the state average. Additionally, the school's per-student spending of $8,742 is lower than nearby schools like Newton Elementary ($10,232), and the student-teacher ratio of 20.2 is on the higher side, suggesting larger class sizes. For parents considering this school, it's important to understand that while the school serves a high-need population, similar schools in the area achieve better results, indicating that the current performance levels are not inevitable. The rapid decline in math scores over the past three years suggests a systemic issue that may warrant asking school leadership about current curriculum, intervention strategies, and plans for improvement.

Open Quote My boys have now gone to WIndham for 2 years & absolutely love school & are flourishing. They will be going into 1st & 2nd grade. I'm on the PTO so I'm at their school often & have a very close relationship w/ administration. I have never felt as though the teachers were unfair or not meeting their required responsibilities. The teachers & staff really care & love our students. They go above & beyond to create the most efficient & safest learning space available to them. We are in a poor area & grossly under funded so our scores & rankings are quite misleading & not truly indicative to our accomplishments nor the students. We are working hard to bring up our letter grade. This is a fantastic school and a child will get back the effort put forth. Close Quote
