This school is a true standout in its region, consistently ranking in the top 10% of middle schools statewide (35th out of 443 schools). The academic performance is exceptional, with proficiency rates that are often 3 to 10 times higher than nearby schools. English Language Arts proficiency sits at a strong 76-77% across all grades. While math scores are also well above state averages, they are the school's relative weak spot, with 8th-grade math proficiency at 47.44%. The school also excels at serving its student subgroups, with African American students ranking in the 94th percentile and Hispanic students in the 93rd percentile statewide.

Attendance is another major strength. The chronic absenteeism rate is just 3.7%, which is dramatically lower than the state average of 12% and far better than nearby schools like Clay-Chalkville Middle School (20.4%) and Rudd Middle School (20.7%). This consistency in attendance likely contributes to the school's academic success. While the school has seen a slight decline in its state ranking over the past few years and a concerning downward trend in special education performance, it remains an "island of excellence" in the region. The Jefferson County and Birmingham City districts, which contain many of the surrounding schools, rank 101st and 119th respectively, highlighting just how exceptional Hewitt-Trussville's outcomes are for families in the area.
