Summary

Kent Elementary School is a public K-5 school in the Kent School District with about 440 students, serving a community where a high percentage of families qualify for meal assistance.

Academically, the school's test scores are below district and state averages, placing it in the lower tier of Washington elementary schools. However, when compared to nearby schools with similar student populations, such as East Hill Elementary or River Ridge Elementary, Kent Elementary performs better. It is notable that the school's performance for some student groups has shown significant improvement year-to-year. The school spends more per student than many of its neighbors, though this higher investment has not yet led to above-average academic outcomes.

An interesting point for parents is that Neely O'Brien Elementary, located less than a mile away, achieves higher rankings despite similar community demographics, suggesting local school factors are important. Proficiency in math also shows a concerning drop between 3rd and 5th grade. While the entire Kent School District faces challenges, Kent Elementary's recent progress with certain groups and its level of funding are potential strengths to build upon for future improvement.

Open Quote Pulled my kids out to home school. The school is moldy, dirty and has terrible procedures for student safety. There is no supervision in the morning and when the school is released for the day it is complete chaos, there is no order to the children being released into the neighboring apartment complexes. Expect to see a lot of bullying and cursing from the bigger kids. The smaller kids are not properly kept away from the older kids in the school, and considering the intensity of the home environment most kids in this school are exposed to, this is a huge oversight. This school is not a in a good neighborhood. Every day I would pick up my children and be in the line behind a man who drove a black SUV with stickers of naked girls and marijuana leaves all over it. Not something I want my kids exposed to at SCHOOL. I complained and was told there was nothing they were willing to do about it. Close Quote
