Summary

Mark Twain Elementary School is a public elementary school (PK-5) serving 531 students in the Federal Way School District, which ranks in the bottom third of districts statewide.

The school faces significant challenges, with academic performance consistently ranking in the bottom 5% of Washington elementary schools for most of the last decade. In the 2024-2025 school year, only 29.3% of students were proficient in English, 17.59% in math, and 26.23% in science, placing it well below both district and state averages. The school serves a student population with very high economic need, with 88.51% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch—the highest rate among ten nearby comparison schools. Furthermore, per-student spending at Mark Twain is lower than at most of its district peers, such as Camelot Elementary School and Wildwood Elementary School.

Interesting comparisons to nearby schools highlight that proximity does not guarantee similar outcomes. For instance, Woodmont K-8 School (0.79 miles away) and Star Lake Elementary School (0.89 miles away) serve similar communities but achieve significantly better results. Performance for specific student groups at Mark Twain has also shown dramatic year-to-year swings, suggesting inconsistent support systems. While all schools in the Federal Way School District struggle, Mark Twain's persistent position at the very bottom indicates it faces additional, school-specific challenges that warrant attention.

Open Quote Student behavior sucks. They have been told multiple times to stop running through the backyard of some of our condo owners at Village at Redondo. The bus drops them of at 285th, and they run through the backyard to 284th. They curse, and throw rocks if you confront them. Horrible students. Close Quote
