Summary

Bonnabel Magnet Academy High School in Kenner, LA, is a large public high school serving 2,376 students in grades 9-12, with 58.5% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, and it is part of the Jefferson Parish school district.

Bonnabel faces significant challenges that set it apart from nearby schools. Its chronic absenteeism rate of 41.6% is nearly double the district and state averages, and dramatically higher than high-performing magnet schools like Patrick F. Taylor Science & Technology Academy (3.9%) and Haynes Academy School for Advanced Studies (4.1%). The graduation rate is critically low at 62.3%, far below the state average of 85.0% and schools like Riverdale High School (88.9%) and Warren Easton Charter High School (92.5%). Test scores are consistently low across all subjects, with only 33% proficient in Algebra I compared to 65% statewide, and the dropout rate of 9.9% is more than triple the state average. Despite being called a "Magnet Academy," Bonnabel's performance is more akin to a struggling comprehensive high school, and it is the lowest-performing comprehensive high school in the district, far outperformed by its magnet peers and even by non-magnet schools like Riverdale and East Jefferson High School.

The school shows relative strength in serving its African American and Special Education students, but performs poorly for other subgroups. The extreme chronic absenteeism is likely a key driver of low academic performance, and the school has experienced a decade-long decline in state rankings, now in the bottom 20% for nine consecutive years. While schools like Riverdale and East Jefferson serve similar demographics, they achieve significantly better outcomes, suggesting Bonnabel's challenges are not solely due to its student population but also to school-level factors that need urgent attention.

Open Quote This school and administration is a DISGRACE. I hear horror stories from reliable sources on almost a daily basis. Students allowed to disrespect and abuse teachers and other students with very little or no consequences. Teachers get blamed for the students uncivilized, disgusting behavior and lack of interest in their studies. Violence among students occurs regularly. It’s no wonder teachers are leaving in record numbers.
This administration needs investigating asap.
If I could rate zero stars, I would. Close Quote
