Summary

Matthew W. Gilbert Middle School in Jacksonville, FL, is a public school serving 555 students in grades 6-8 within the Duval district, located in a high-poverty community where nearly 79% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

The most critical issue at Matthew W. Gilbert is an extreme chronic absenteeism rate of 81.5% for the 2023-2024 school year, which is nearly double the district average and over 2.5 times the state average. This rate is the highest among nearby schools, standing in stark contrast to high-performing magnet schools like Julia Landon College Preparatory & Leadership Development S (16.0% absenteeism) and James Weldon Johnson College Preparatory Middle School (21.1% absenteeism). Academic proficiency is consistently low across subjects, with only 27% of 6th graders proficient in English Language Arts and 11% in Math, compared to district averages of 55% and 49%, respectively. This places the school in the bottom 10% of Florida middle schools, earning a 0-star rating.

Despite these challenges, there are notable bright spots. Matthew W. Gilbert spends $12,070 per student, higher than the district average and significantly more than nearby high-performing schools like Julia Landon ($7,711), indicating that funding alone isn't the issue. Remarkably, 89% of students taking the Algebra 1 EOC were proficient, matching the rates at top magnet schools like Lavilla School Of The Arts. Additionally, 8th-grade Math proficiency has shown a slight upward trend, rising from 19% in 2022-2023 to 38% in 2025-2026. These pockets of success suggest targeted interventions or effective teaching in specific areas, even as the school grapples with severe socioeconomic and attendance-related hurdles.

Open Quote I think the curriculum is very good. My son loves this school. People seem to judge the area that the school is located and I am not understanding why because there are kids from the poor to the poorest neighborhoods that become most successful. It may take a little longer however it does happen!!! Close Quote
