Summary

Rowan Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 205 students in the San Diego Unified School District, located in a high-need area of San Diego (92105) where it stands out for achieving academic results that exceed expectations given its student population.

The school is particularly effective in supporting its students, with math scores notably above the state average and strong performance rankings for students from low-income families and Hispanic students. A key success story is the dramatic reduction in chronic absenteeism, which has fallen by over 60% in recent years. Compared to nearby schools with similar student populations like Hamilton Elementary, Webster Elementary, and Chollas/Mead Elementary, Rowan consistently achieves higher proficiency rates and lower absenteeism.

Rowan's steady improvement is supported by higher per-student spending than many area schools, and it performs slightly below the average for the San Diego Unified district overall but significantly above what is typical for schools with its demographic profile. While there is a notable performance gap between male and female students that the school can address, Rowan's trajectory demonstrates a successful model of beating predictions through focused strategies and resources.

Open Quote We moved to the neighborhood from out of state and didn't want to choice to another school and sit in traffic. It has been a good decision for us. It is small and secluded and the new principal is making wonderful improvements. We are proud to send our kids to Rowan. Close Quote
