Summary

Hamilton Elementary is a San Diego neighborhood school serving kindergarten through fifth grade, with 406 students, in the San Diego Unified district. Its latest proficiency rates were 23% in English language arts (ELA), 25% in math, and 13% in science. Chronic absenteeism is comparatively low, at 11%, but the central concern is that test results are below both the state and district in every core subject—and fell in all three in the latest year.

Results have weakened over time: from 2022–2023 to 2025–2026, Hamilton’s proficiency fell by 14 points in ELA, 6 in math, and 10 in science, even as state and district rates rose. SchoolDigger’s statewide ranking dropped from the 42nd percentile and 2 stars in 2024–2025 to the 14th percentile and 1 star in 2025–2026. Attendance improved substantially, from 35% chronic absenteeism in 2021–2022 to 11% in 2025–2026. The 2024–2025 student-teacher ratio was 22.5, lower than at most nearby schools; 94% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible that year, a high but not unusual local figure. SchoolDigger subgroup rankings show notable variation: African American Students ranked at the 80th percentile in 2022–2023, compared with Hamilton’s overall 49th percentile, while the Homeless Students ranking fell from the 92nd percentile in 2023–2024 to the 14th percentile in 2025–2026, matching the school’s overall ranking.
