Summary

Clairemont Canyons Academy is a public K-5 elementary school serving 318 students in the San Diego Unified district, which has recently seen a notable decline in its statewide academic ranking.

The school faces a significant challenge with student attendance, as its chronic absenteeism rate of 25.3% is much higher than the district average and far exceeds rates at high-performing neighbors like Holmes Elementary (6.6%) and Hawthorne Elementary (11.8%). Academically, its proficiency rates in English and Math are below the district average, and its statewide ranking has dropped to the 47th percentile, a decline from previous years. Interestingly, the school spends more per student ($30,288) than any nearby school, including those that perform much better, suggesting that spending alone does not guarantee top results.

When compared to schools with similar student demographics, such as Sequoia Elementary, Clairemont Canyons' performance is lower. The school shows a considerable achievement gap between female and male students, and its test scores drop noticeably between 3rd and 4th grade. While it has historically been a mid-performing school, focusing on improving attendance and ensuring consistent teaching across all grades appear to be key opportunities for the school to regain its former standing.

Open Quote As a long time community member, I'm impressed by how this school continues to improve. For years I've been at the craft fair and have been impressed by their dedicated PTA, polite and respectful students, and wonderful staff. I tell my neighbors how proud I am that Lindbergh is our neighborhood school and can't wait for my grandson to start there in the fall. Close Quote
