Summary

Freedom Middle is a public school serving 712 students in grades 7-8 within the Rosedale Union Elementary district in Bakersfield, CA, which is performing above many area districts but has seen its statewide ranking decline in recent years.

The school presents a mixed picture, with clear strengths and challenges. On the positive side, Freedom Middle excels at keeping students engaged, with a chronic absenteeism rate of 13.5% that is significantly better than the state average and far better than many nearby schools like Standard Middle (33.4%) and Beardsley Junior High (33.3%). It also performs relatively well in English Language Arts. However, the school faces a significant challenge in mathematics, where only 27.5% of students are proficient, a rate notably lower than the district average and neighboring schools such as Rosedale Middle (36.28%) and Fruitvale Junior High (42.23%).

When compared to its closest peer, Rosedale Middle in the same district, Freedom Middle's academic gaps in math and science become more apparent, suggesting room for improvement by learning from successful practices within the district. Despite these academic concerns, the school operates with lower per-student spending than most comparable schools, indicating either efficient use of resources or a potential area for increased support to address its specific needs.

Open Quote Freedom Middle School is a great school. There are many excellent teachers and the students are very well behaved compared to other schools I have been a substitute teacher for. The office staff is very friendly. The school is modern. Freedom has an excellent music program and their marching band is very large. I wouldn't hesitate to send my children there. Close Quote
