Summary

Fairfax Senior High is a large public high school serving grades 9-12 with about 1,500 students in the Los Angeles Unified School District, known for its strong graduation success despite serving a community with significant economic need.

The school has clear strengths, particularly in English Language Arts, where student proficiency exceeds the district average, and in its graduation rate of 91.7%, which is higher than both the district and state. It effectively supports many student groups and performs solidly compared to some nearby comprehensive schools like Helen Bernstein High and Los Angeles Senior High. However, it faces two major challenges: math proficiency is well below district and state averages, and chronic absenteeism—students missing too much school—is notably high at 36.1%, which is nearly double the LAUSD rate.

When looking at the broader landscape, Fairfax occupies a middle ground. It significantly outperforms local continuation schools, such as Cheviot Hills Continuation, but trails behind selective or more affluent schools like the Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies (LACES) and Beverly Hills High in Beverly Hills Unified. This comparison highlights that Fairfax provides a stable and successful pathway to graduation for its students within the context of its community's resources and challenges.

Open Quote This school is bad. DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN HERE. My son - who is in special ed- was not ready for college afterwards because the teachers did not teach. When I complain to the principal no call back and too busy to see me. They need to change some staff at this school plus the school is filthy. Close Quote
