Summary

Cleveland Elementary is a top-rated K-5 public school serving 450 students in Lakewood, California, as part of the Long Beach Unified School District.

This school stands out for its exceptional and rising academic performance, now ranking in the 91st percentile statewide. Its test scores in English and Math are roughly 30 points higher than the district average, creating the largest proficiency gap among nearby schools. While other local schools like Bragg Elementary and Henry are also high-performing, Cleveland uniquely excels in supporting specific student groups, ranking in the top 1-2% in the state for Hispanic and special education students. The school's steady improvement over the past decade to a 5-star rating contrasts with some neighboring schools that have seen their ratings decline.

Cleveland's success is supported by high per-student spending, though how resources are used appears key, as some higher-spending schools like Gompers have lower rankings. An area for potential growth is chronic absenteeism, where its rate is higher than the state average and than peers like Henry. Additionally, while strong, its science scores are closer to state averages compared to its stellar ELA and Math results. Overall, Cleveland Elementary is a premier choice that demonstrates remarkable effectiveness across its diverse student community.

Open Quote The new administration does not communicate with parents or staff. The school is like a ship without a captain. Teacher's do not seem to be communicating with each other, and as a result are having to fend for themselves. With the increased class size, teacher's frequently switching grades with no prep time, and an absentee principal, the school seems to be in a cycle of decline.

The school promotes an active PTA, Science Fair and Band, but the reality is much different. The PTA is made of a group of friends who do not allow any input or share any plans until after the fact. They spent more money on their own awards then they did on the Science Fair. The "Science Fair" amounted to kids turning in assignments, and then picking them up a few weeks later with a participation medal. There was never any demonstration or opportunity for students to discuss their project.

The "band" consisted of 4 kids in 2012.

There is no gifted or pals program, and the principal has "no idea" how to start one. Principal Montoya has also said she has no interest in having a master calendar, no knowledge of field trips, science fair, changes to the bell schedule or movement of teacher's from one grade to another.

This school is an accident waiting to happen. Close Quote
