Summary

Lyman Gilmore Middle is a public school serving 464 students in grades 5 through 8 in Grass Valley, part of the Grass Valley Elementary district, which serves a community with a higher level of economic need than many surrounding areas.

The school faces significant challenges, with academic performance in English and math consistently below both state averages and nearby schools like Seven Hills Intermediate and Weimar Hills. A major concern is chronic absenteeism, with over a quarter of students missing too much school—a rate much higher than most neighbors, including Union Hill Middle, which is only 2.2 miles away. Performance has declined in recent years, with particularly sharp drops for students in special education programs.

Despite these struggles, there are some nuances; science scores are closer to the state average, and 8th graders perform notably better in English than students in lower grades. The school spends more per student than some higher-performing schools, indicating that resources alone aren't the defining factor. For parents, the key takeaway is that while Lyman Gilmore serves a community with greater economic needs, its academic results and attendance issues lag behind similar and neighboring schools, suggesting internal practices are an important area for potential improvement.
