The Homer, Alaska area contains 8 public schools serving roughly 1,320 students across elementary, middle, and high school grades, all part of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, which ranks 10th out of 23 Alaska districts. Homer's schools include four elementary schools (Paul Banks Elementary, West Homer Elementary, McNeil Canyon Elementary, and Fireweed Academy), one middle school (Homer Middle School), two high schools (Homer High School and Homer Flex School), and one alternative PK-12 school (Razdolna School).

McNeil Canyon Elementary is the clear academic standout in Homer, ranked #4 in Alaska for 2025-26 with exceptional scores: 85.2% proficiency in 4th grade math and 78.6% in 6th grade math, compared to state averages around 32-35%. Homer High School posts a strong 94.6% graduation rate and excellent 10th grade science results (71% proficient), though its state ranking has been volatile, swinging from #2 in 2024-25 to #18 the following year. West Homer Elementary also performs well, with 6th grade math at 74.4% proficiency. Homer Middle School, once a top-10 Alaska school, has cooled to the middle of the pack, though 7th grade math remains a bright spot at 55.6% proficiency versus the state's 32.3%.

Homer's elementary grades are clearly its strongest tier, with math proficiency rates roughly double the state average in several grades. However, math proficiency drops sharply as students advance, from 74-79% in 6th grade to 55.6% in 7th, 34.9% in 8th, and just 20% in 9th grade. The alternative schools face the biggest challenges: Homer Flex School and Razdolna School have lower graduation rates (70% and 61.5%) and higher poverty levels, though Homer Flex's 10th grade science score (60%) beats the district average. Notably, McNeil Canyon achieves top-tier results despite having one of the highest free/reduced-lunch rates in Homer, showing that poverty and performance are not simply linked. Fireweed Academy shows uneven results across grade levels, and Paul Banks Elementary serves only PK-2, so it has no test data and remains a missing piece in evaluating Homer's earliest school years.
