Thomas Jefferson Elementary is a K–5 neighborhood school in Wausau, WI, serving 372 students in the Wausau School District. It is a high-poverty school—about 61% of students qualified for free/reduced lunch in 2024-25—and it spends $16,125 per student, with a 12.8:1 student-teacher ratio. On the 2025-26 SchoolDigger ranking, it placed 677th of 1,039 Wisconsin elementary schools (35th percentile, 2 stars), the 7th-highest among nine ranked nearby schools.

Jefferson's clearest strength is attendance: chronic absenteeism was 7.9% in 2024-25, less than half the state rate and about half its district's rate. That is especially notable because nearby Franklin Elementary (69.1% free/reduced lunch) and John Marshall Elementary (58.9%) had absenteeism of 14.7% and 16.7%. The school also has an unusual bright spot in English Language Learner outcomes: it ranked in the top fifth of Wisconsin schools for ELL students for three straight years (88th, 93rd, and 80th percentile). Its 4th grade beat the district average in all four tested subjects in 2025-26, and 4th-grade social studies (67.6%) was the only Jefferson result above the state average.

The concern is a sharp reversal after a real turnaround. Jefferson climbed from the 25th percentile in 2016-17 to the 69th in 2022-23, then fell 33 percentile points in two years to 35th in 2025-26—the steepest one-year slide among nearby schools. The decline is concentrated in 3rd- and 5th-grade reading and math; 5th-grade ELA was 17.1 points below the district. Compared with high-poverty peers, Jefferson still looks relatively strong: it outranks John Marshall Elementary and Franklin Elementary by 10–15 percentile points and beats G D Jones Elementary by 19 points despite serving a poorer population. But compared with lower-poverty, lower-spending Stettin Elementary (68th percentile, $11,703 per student), Jefferson's higher resources are not yet translating into higher overall achievement.
