Urban Middle is a 568-student school serving grades 6–8 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin — one of five middle schools in the Sheboygan Area School District and its second-largest, with several smaller districts, including Kohler Middle, Sheboygan Falls Middle, and Howards Grove Middle, within a few miles. In 2025–2026 it ranked 452nd of 643 Wisconsin middle schools (30th percentile, 1 star). A decade ago it sat in the mid-40s percentile; it has lost roughly 15–17 percentile points in five years, dropping to 1 star in 2024–25, with a small uptick since (28 to 30).

Comparisons with neighboring schools are striking. Every middle school outside Sheboygan in this comparison ranks 53rd percentile or better, while every school inside the district ranks 31st or worse — Kohler Middle, under four miles away, is at the 99th percentile. Urban's free/reduced-lunch rate of 67.25% is roughly 2.3 to 4.5 times that of Oostburg Middle, Howards Grove Middle, or Cedar Grove-Belgium Middle, and its chronic absenteeism of 23.1% is roughly ten times the 2.4% at Oostburg and Kohler. Urban's clearest strengths are its 8th grade results. Its 8th grade social studies proficiency of 63.44 is just 1.2 points below the state and the best among Sheboygan middle schools, and it beats the district average on six of eight grade-and-subject measures. Dropout has stayed at or below district and state rates. The weak spot is 6th grade: 38.51 in ELA and 35.00 in math, the lowest in this comparison set and roughly an 8-point one-year drop. English Language Learners slipped from the 90th to the 53rd percentile in two years and special-education students from the 55th to the 21st, and absenteeism has held between about 22% and 26% for five straight years.
