Summary

Genesee Hill Elementary is a K–5 school in Seattle’s West Seattle area serving 451 students. Located on SW Dakota Street, it is near several other Seattle Public Schools, including Alki Elementary School, Lafayette Elementary School, and Fairmount Park Elementary School. Genesee Hill ranks 89th out of 1,138 Washington schools for 2025–2026, placing it in the 92nd percentile with a five-star rating. Its 17:1 student-teacher ratio and $20,815 in per-student spending are fairly typical for the local comparison group, while its 11.09% free- or reduced-price lunch rate is lower than at many nearby schools.

Genesee Hill stands out for its latest academic results. It posted the highest reported all-grade proficiency rates among the nearby schools in English language arts, math, and science: 82.79%, 75.35%, and 84.42%, respectively. Those results were well above the Seattle School District No. 1 averages of 68.13%, 60.24%, and 65.01%. The school also edged out strong nearby results from Alki Elementary School and exceeded results at Pathfinder K-8 School by 11.30 points in ELA, 14.87 points in math, and 8.28 points in science. Its fifth-grade outcomes were particularly strong, including 88.31% ELA proficiency and 84.42% science proficiency.

The school’s performance has been consistently strong over time. Math remained near or above 75% for the last three reported years, while science rose from 76.74% to 84.42% most recently and ELA reached a four-year high. Genesee Hill also combines high achievement with a larger enrollment than most nearby schools. Parents may want to monitor subgroup effectiveness, however: the recent ranking for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds fell to the 45th percentile, and special education effectiveness was at the 73rd percentile in 2025–2026. These are comparative school-effectiveness measures, not proficiency rates, and can vary by year and student group.

Open Quote Parents, teachers, principal and students work together to make this school what it is: Excellent.

The facilities are inadequate for the now more than 400 students, but students don't seem to mind the temporary classrooms (portables? - I'd like to see just how portable they are!).

The PTA actively raises money to fund music, art and Singapore Math which in my mind is why the school is one of the top in the state in a district that is otherwise woefully underfunded. Close Quote
