Summary

Lafayette Elementary School is a PK–5 school serving 532 students in West Seattle at 2645 California Avenue SW, within the Seattle School District No. 1. It is the largest school in this comparison group and ranks among Washington’s strongest, earning five stars and placing 81st out of 1,138 schools, in the 93rd percentile.

Lafayette’s 2025–26 proficiency rates were 79.09% in English language arts, 72.14% in math, and 77.78% in science—well above both district and statewide averages. Results improved in all three subjects from the prior year, especially ELA, which rose from 69.84% to 79.09%. Science has been consistently strong, while math remains a clear strength compared with the state but is the main area to monitor, particularly in fourth and fifth grade, where proficiency was about 69%. Third grade posted the strongest grade-level results, including 86.02% in ELA and 78.49% in math. Lafayette also has high statewide effectiveness rankings for several student groups, including students receiving special education services and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

Lafayette performs within a notably strong local cluster. Nearby Alki Elementary School ranked 60th statewide, while Fairmount Park Elementary School, Genesee Hill Elementary, and Gatewood Elementary School also ranked around the 92nd–95th percentiles. Lafayette’s results are substantially higher than those at West Seattle Elementary School, Sanislo Elementary School, and Roxhill Elementary School. Its 17.7 student-teacher ratio and $20,170 per-student spending are moderate locally, suggesting that staffing and spending alone do not explain performance.

Open Quote My two children love Lafayette. We had considered going to the APP school, but when we compared pros/cons we just couldn't justify leaving a school with so many resources and opportunities for our children. Although we have undergone some changes in leadership recently, the strength's of the school remain. Strong parent involvement, dedicated teachers and resources to hep our children succeed.
