Summary

Leschi Elementary School is a small PK–5 school in Seattle’s Leschi neighborhood, serving 240 students near several other Seattle School District No. 1 elementary schools. Its closest comparison is Madrona K-5 School, about 0.7 miles away, followed by Thurgood Marshall Elementary, about 0.85 miles away. The district ranks in the 81st percentile statewide, but Leschi ranked in the 28th percentile for 2025–2026, showing that districtwide results do not necessarily reflect the experience at each individual school.

Leschi’s latest proficiency rates were 36.73% in English Language Arts, 35.42% in math, and 43.33% in science—below both district and state results in every subject. It also trailed most nearby schools. For example, Thurgood Marshall Elementary recorded 74.7% proficiency in ELA and 72.59% in math, while Hawthorne Elementary School recorded 71.2% and 65.76%, respectively. Leschi’s science performance is a relative strength, though it remains below district and state averages. Fourth grade stands out as the clearest concern, with only 27.03% proficient in ELA and 30.56% in math. Overall results have declined since 2023–2024, when ELA proficiency was 53.33% and science was 58.33%.

The school has notable resource advantages: its 9.6-to-1 student-teacher ratio was the lowest among nearby schools with available data, and reported spending was $28,206 per student. Its 44.58% free- or reduced-price lunch rate is midrange compared with nearby schools, rather than the highest or lowest. These factors make the recent academic results worth examining closely, particularly supports for fourth grade, ELA, and students from low-income households. The available subgroup effectiveness rankings also vary substantially, with low-socioeconomic-status students at the 15th percentile and White students at the 75th percentile; these figures are indicators for further investigation, not direct proficiency rates. Nearby schools such as Stevens Elementary School, Beacon Hill International School, and John Muir Elementary School provide additional local points of comparison.

Open Quote The school is very inclusive, welcoming families from a broad variety of backgrounds with Montessori and conventional classroom options. The teachers are top notch, an observation that I've heard repeated from parents who are or were teachers themselves. Enrollment has consistently grown over the years and test scores have gradually increased.

The PTA was reinvigorated around 2009 and coordinates its activities well with the school needs. Overall, PTA financial support has steadily grown from a few thousand to nearly $50,000. These funds are used wisely to mainly support teachers needs in their classrooms, as well as the library and technology center. There are many, many other positive things about the school. It isn't perfect, but it is very, very good and the trend lines are positive. Close Quote

Open Quote Shocked!!! Shocked!!! I have no idea why this school has only a one star rating. No school in Seattle is more loving, caring, diverse, socially aware, and proud. The PTA is insanely excellent, creative and resourceful. The student body is one of the most engaged my child has EVER experienced within the OUTSTANDING Montessori tract. Our Principle Toner is one of the most hands-on, hardest working, mother of twins -- School Leader on Earth. One only has to walk the halls to see the incredible artwork on the walls. Leschi participates with "Seattle Music Partners" for Orchestra and Band at NO COST to parents or students including musical instruments for said program. Leschi has one of the States best elementary school Chess Clubs, Reading Clubs, Language Clubs. I give this hidden treasure of a school 5 out of 5 stars and would happily offer 10 out of 10. Do not be fooled by such a ridiculous rating. It is no where near reality. Close Quote
