Summary

Bailey Gatzert Elementary School is a PK–5 public school in Seattle serving 402 students in an urban community with substantial economic need; 79.6% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–25. The school is part of the relatively highly ranked Seattle School District No. 1, but its own 2025–26 statewide ranking was 841st of 1,138 schools, at the 26th percentile.

Academic results remain below district and state averages, though they improved in all three tested subjects in the latest year. In 2025–26, proficiency was 37.3% in English Language Arts, 35.52% in math, and 38.78% in science. Math was the school’s strongest subject relative to the state, while ELA showed the largest gap compared with the district. Math performance was also consistently low across third, fourth, and fifth grades, suggesting a schoolwide improvement priority. Fifth-grade ELA was the strongest grade-subject combination at 45.83%. The school’s 12.1-to-1 student-teacher ratio and $27,032 in per-student spending are relatively favorable compared with several nearby schools, although these resources have not yet produced achievement levels matching the district.

For local context, Leschi Elementary School had very similar 2025–26 results, while Lowell Elementary School performed lower in all three subjects. In contrast, McGilvra Elementary School, Montlake Elementary School, and Thurgood Marshall Elementary reported substantially higher proficiency rates, serving communities with lower reported economic-need rates. A notable strength is Bailey Gatzert’s English Language Learner effectiveness ranking, which reached the 72nd percentile statewide. The key question for families is whether the school can sustain its recent gains while extending effective practices across grades and student groups.
