Summary

Jefferson Elementary is a public PK-5 school serving 418 students in the Richland School District, achieving academic results close to the state average while serving a student population where over 60% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

When compared to nearby schools, Jefferson stands out for its effectiveness with its specific student community. For instance, it performs notably better than Jason Lee Elementary School, which has a very similar economic profile, and significantly outperforms elementary schools in the neighboring Pasco School District. However, the school faces a significant and well-documented challenge in supporting its Special Education students, an area where it has been improving but still ranks very low statewide. Academically, the school shows more year-to-year volatility in test scores than some stable, higher-performing district schools like White Bluffs Elementary School.

Jefferson Elementary has the highest per-student spending among the listed Richland schools, which supports a lower student-teacher ratio, though this spending does not directly correlate with the highest test scores in the district. An interesting pattern at Jefferson is a sharp drop in 4th-grade math proficiency, which is more pronounced than at comparison schools, suggesting a specific curricular or transitional hurdle at that grade level. Overall, the school demonstrates that within the same district, schools with similar demographics can have different outcomes, highlighting the importance of individual school practices and resources.

Open Quote Jefferson is a school with an incredibly strong teaching staff and very supportive PTA. If you want a school where your child will be treated as an individual, differentiated for based on their unique needs regardless of HiCap scores, and where every staff member knows them by name, then you will love Jefferson. It is a school with a truly diverse student body: income diversity, racial diversity, religious diversity, and diversity of ability. Don't let the test scores fool you Jefferson is a great school.
