Summary

Firgrove Elementary is a public K-6 school serving 593 students in the Puyallup School District, which ranks in the top half of districts statewide, though the school itself has historically ranked in the lower third of Washington elementary schools.

The school serves a community with significant economic need, with over two-thirds of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, a rate higher than all nearby schools like Warren Hunt Elementary and Ridgecrest Elementary. Academically, proficiency rates in English, math, and science are below both district and state averages, with a particularly large gap in early grades; for example, only about 23% of third graders are proficient in English compared to nearly 47% district-wide. Despite these challenges, the school has shown recent improvement, moving from a 1-star to a 2-star rating and climbing in its statewide ranking.

Firgrove operates with more resources per student and a lower student-teacher ratio than its peers, and it shows notable strengths in serving some student subgroups. However, performance varies dramatically between grade levels, and there is a stark contrast with higher-performing schools just miles away, such as Frank Brouillet Elementary. The recent positive trend is a key development for parents to watch.

Open Quote I would give this school the rating of 1 star because of their lack of discipline. Much progress is needed to educate the populace of this school about acceptance of other ethnicities. It was my experience that bullying of Asian American students went on and on with nothing be done. Close Quote
