Summary

La Venture Middle School is a public school serving 663 students in grades 6–8 in the Mount Vernon community and is part of the Mount Vernon School District.

The school’s recent progress is one of its biggest strengths. Its statewide ranking rose from the 13th percentile in 2018–2019 to the 42nd percentile in 2025–2026, although it remains below the statewide midpoint. La Venture also outperformed its district in every tested subject: 42.3% of students were proficient in English Language Arts, 34.39% in math, and 38.91% in science. These results exceeded district averages by about 6–8 percentage points. Performance has improved in all three subjects since 2022–2023, with science showing the largest gain. Eighth-grade ELA is a particular bright spot at 51.35%, slightly above the statewide eighth-grade rate. Math is less consistent, especially in eighth grade, where proficiency was 32.88%. Nearly 69.83% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch, and the student-teacher ratio was 19.3:1.

La Venture’s results are especially notable compared with nearby Mount Baker Middle School, which serves a very similar student population. La Venture led Mount Baker by 20.74 points in ELA, 18.10 points in math, and 26.48 points in science. It trails higher-ranked schools such as Anacortes Middle School, Stanwood Middle School, and Port Susan Middle School, but those schools generally serve fewer students qualifying for subsidized meals. Subgroup results have improved broadly, while English Language Learner effectiveness remains a key area for attention at the 26th percentile. Overall, La Venture appears to be on a meaningful upward trajectory.
