Summary

Hawthorne Elementary School is a public K-5 school serving 417 students in the Kennewick School District, notable for its strong and consistent improvement over the last five years.

The school's standout strength is in mathematics, where 57% of students are proficient, significantly outperforming both the district and state averages and ranking second only to nearby Lincoln Elementary School; this is particularly impressive as Hawthorne serves a student population with greater economic need. The school has proven highly effective in supporting its students, earning a 4-star rating for its work with economically disadvantaged students and showing strong results for English Language Learners, especially when compared to other high-need schools in the area like Westgate Elementary School and Edison Elementary School.

While math is a clear strength, areas for growth include science proficiency and English Language Arts performance in the early grades; the school also sees a notable performance gap between male and female students. Overall, Hawthorne's steady rise to become a mid-to-upper tier school within the district demonstrates effective strategies for student success, making it a compelling option for families seeking strong academic foundations.

Open Quote I certainly will not have my child enrolled here next year. The principal is very unfriendly when I visit the school. When I have a concern, he is very combative. In addition, the classrooms are very large. 34 students! Close Quote
