Summary

Hood Canal Elementary School is a public PK-8 school serving 337 students in Shelton, WA, located within the Hood Canal School District, a rural area where the school faces significant academic challenges despite higher-than-average funding.

The school is ranked in the bottom quartile of Washington elementary schools, with proficiency rates in English (38%) and math (22%) well below state averages, though science scores are relatively stronger at 43%. Notably, the school spends about $25,000 per student, which is significantly more than nearby schools like Grapeview Elementary & Middle School or Southside Elementary, yet it consistently underperforms them academically. This creates a puzzling situation where high investment has not yet led to comparable student outcomes. Performance is also uneven across grades, with math scores dropping sharply as students move from 3rd to 5th grade.

When compared to similar schools, Southside Elementary stands out as a bright spot; it serves a similar grade range (PK-7) and has comparable class sizes, but achieves much higher test scores with lower per-student spending. This suggests that factors beyond just funding and demographics are at play. For parents, the key takeaway is that while Hood Canal Elementary serves a community with high economic need and invests heavily in its students, it is still working to translate those resources into consistent, high academic achievement across all subjects and grade levels.
