Summary

Hilltop Elementary is a PK–5 school serving 519 students in Seattle’s south end, in a high-need community, and is part of the Highline School District.

Hilltop’s academic results are below district and state averages in every tested subject. In 2025–26, 19.37% of students were proficient in English language arts, compared with 34.68% districtwide and 52.81% statewide. Math proficiency was 20.18%, and science proficiency was 30.67%. Literacy is the clearest concern, particularly in fourth grade, where only 11.54% were proficient in ELA; fourth-grade math was also low at 16.67%. Among nearby Highline schools, Hilltop had the lowest overall ranking and the weakest ELA result. For comparison, White Center Heights Elementary had 34.12% ELA proficiency, while Hazel Valley Elementary had 29.27%.

There are some encouraging signs. Hilltop’s statewide ranking improved to the 7th percentile, up from the 1st–3rd percentile range in recent years, and science proficiency rose sharply from 16.13% to 30.67%. Science is now stronger than at Cedarhurst Elementary, Beverly Park Elementary at Glendale, and Hazel Valley, though it remains below the state average. About 76.11% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch, and the student-teacher ratio was 17.8:1. Overall, the data suggest early but uneven progress, with sustained attention needed for literacy, fourth-grade instruction, math, English learners, Hispanic students, and students from low-income households.
