Summary

Hillcrest Elementary is a large, well-regarded public school serving 842 students from Pre-K through 5th grade in the high-performing Lake Stevens School District.

The school has a clear strength in mathematics, where student scores consistently outpace both the state and district averages. It also shows exceptional effectiveness in supporting students from lower-income families and English Language Learners. However, parents should be aware of two significant areas of concern: a recent and sharp decline in the measured effectiveness of its special education program, and a notable dip in academic performance in the 4th grade that is more pronounced than at neighboring schools like Stevens Creek Elementary or Glenwood Elementary.

Compared to other local elementary schools, Hillcrest operates with more students per classroom and spends less per student, yet still achieves solid overall results. Its statewide ranking has slipped in recent years, and it faces specific challenges in special education that contrast with its strengths in other areas. While part of an excellent district, Hillcrest's profile is one of a school with distinct successes and clear opportunities for improvement.

Open Quote This is an amazing school that truly cares about their students. My son was really struggling to catch up after moving several times with in a year and was fairly behind. Ms. Fiske (4th grade) really took the time to listen to my son and us and recommend other approaches to help him. We soon found out that he has ADHD and really needed the extra one on one time with his teacher. So the staff at Hillcrest took the time to meet with me and tell me all of the options they had to help my son. I was really appreciative of all the help they were willing to do to help him. Just a great all around school that has great teachers who love their students enough to care about their education. Can't say enough about Hillcrest! Close Quote
