Summary

Westgate Elementary is a K-6 public school serving about 472 students in the Edmonds School District, consistently performing above state and district averages in core subjects despite serving a student population with a higher rate of economic need than many nearby schools.

The school shows notable strengths, particularly in its 6th-grade English scores and in serving students in special education, but it also faces challenges, with significant performance gaps for students from low-income families and a recent, sharp decline in scores for Hispanic students. Compared to its neighbors, Westgate presents an interesting picture: it outperforms schools with similar or higher poverty rates like College Place Elementary and Chase Lake Elementary, yet it doesn't reach the high achievement levels of lower-poverty schools very close by, such as Sherwood Elementary and the exceptional Maplewood Parent Coop.

Overall, Westgate is a solid, middle-tier school within its district that achieves stronger academic results than its funding and student demographics might predict, suggesting effective use of resources. Its gradual shift from a 4-star to a 3-star rating in recent years indicates it is navigating challenges, and its performance relative to schools across district lines, like Echo Lake Elementary School in the higher-ranked Shoreline School District, highlights how district-level factors also play a role in school outcomes.

Open Quote I have little to compare - one other school recently as my kids are all grown up but I enrolled a child who is living with my mother (her mother too) and found Westgate to be one of the most caring, loving and responsive schools I have been involved with ever. The school secretary remembers all the kids names, remembers faces, greets people (like me) The Peace Garden is impressive, the playground, field trips and KINDNESS seems to be one of the most important things.

Our child loved her class and teacher Mrs Allemeier immediately and felt accepted. She can't wait to begin again this year. Carolynne Harris Close Quote
