Summary

Lochburn Middle School is a Lakewood, Washington, school serving 497 students in grades 6–8 as part of the Clover Park School District. The school serves a high-need community, with 82.7% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. Its 15:1 student-teacher ratio is relatively favorable compared with several nearby schools, and its reported per-student spending of $23,494 is the highest among the comparison schools.

Academic results are a significant concern. In 2025–26, 20.59% of students were proficient in English language arts, 11.84% in math, and 11.39% in science. These results are below both district and Washington averages, with the largest gap in science. The school ranked 503rd of 514 Washington middle schools, placing it in the 2nd percentile, although this was an improvement from 533rd of 534 the prior year. Results improved in ELA and math from 2024–25, but science declined. Eighth grade was the weakest grade, with 14.19% proficiency in ELA and 7.14% in math, suggesting that student progress and preparation for high school deserve close attention.

Among nearby schools, Thomas Middle School performed much better, with 44.57% ELA, 27.15% math, and 42.90% science proficiency. Hudtloff Middle School had similar ELA and math results but substantially stronger science performance. Lochburn also trailed Tacoma schools such as Stewart Middle School and Baker Middle School. The nearby Drum Intermediate and Narrows View Intermediate reported considerably higher results, though they serve grades 5–7 and belong to a different district. Overall, the most important improvement priorities appear to be science, eighth-grade instruction, attendance and intervention systems, and making sure existing staffing and funding directly support student learning.
