Summary

Roy Elementary is a public Pre-K through 5th grade school serving 285 students in the rural community of Roy, Washington, as part of the Bethel School District.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges, with its test scores in English, Math, and Science consistently below both the district and state averages, resulting in a statewide ranking in the 29th percentile. This is despite the school having a lower student-teacher ratio and higher per-student spending than many nearby schools, a puzzling situation that suggests resources may not be translating effectively into classroom results. The school serves a high-need population, with over 61% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, a rate that has risen in recent years.

Comparisons with nearby schools highlight opportunities for improvement. For instance, Elk Plain School of Choice, another school in the same district, outperforms Roy Elementary across all subjects. Furthermore, schools with similar student demographics, like Fort Stevens Elementary in the Yelm School District, achieve much stronger academic results, demonstrating that high performance is possible with a similar student population. Performance also varies greatly by grade level and student subgroup within Roy Elementary, indicating some supports are working better than others.

Open Quote Some staff are nice, some of the teachers are questionable, and I have had some negative experiences with certain teachers. Seems as if it is a test school for new teachers (most of whom would fail at teaching in the rest of the district). Of the teachers who are there the ones that have been teaching for a while are great. Not enough clubs or activities for students. Close Quote
