Bethel High School is a large public high school in Spanaway, Washington, serving grades 9–12 and 1,688 students in the Bethel School District. Its overall ranking is near the middle of Washington high schools—201st of 396—but the school has improved considerably from its 2018–2019 position. Bethel serves a diverse, economically mixed community, with about 50.83% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.

Bethel’s strongest results are in student completion and English Language Arts. The 2024–2025 graduation rate was 93.2%, higher than both the district’s 91.6% and the state’s 82.6%; its dropout rate was 5.1%, well below the statewide 9.8%. In 2025–2026, 61.07% of students were proficient in ELA, compared with 49.54% in the district and 52.81% statewide. Math is the clearest challenge: 28.01% were proficient, below both the district’s 38.16% and the state’s 43.11%. Science proficiency was 41.52%, also below the state’s 50.95% and slightly below the district. Results for students receiving special education services are an important area for further attention, while outcomes for military-connected students, Hispanic students, English learners, and students from low-income households ranked relatively well compared with schools statewide.

Among nearby large comprehensive high schools, Bethel currently ranks slightly ahead of Spanaway Lake High School and Graham Kapowsin High School, and Bethel had the highest math proficiency among those three. However, Emerald Ridge High School and Gov. John Rogers High School posted stronger ELA and science results. Bethel’s graduation rate nonetheless exceeded both of those schools. Overall, the school appears particularly successful at keeping students on track to graduate, while math improvement, science consistency, and support for students receiving special education services remain key priorities.
