Summary

Odle Middle School is a highly-regarded public school serving about 975 students in grades 6 through 8 within the top-ranked Bellevue School District.

Academically, Odle is a consistent top performer, ranking 19th out of over 500 middle schools in Washington with proficiency rates well above state averages in English, Math, and Science. It has maintained this high standing for years. However, when compared to the very highest-achieving schools nearby, such as Tyee Middle School in the same district or Evergreen Middle School in the Lake Washington School District, Odle's test scores are slightly lower. The school's economic profile, with about 20% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, sits in the middle among local schools, higher than some top performers but lower than others like Highland Middle School.

A key finding is that Odle's strong overall results mask significant performance gaps for students from low-income families and Hispanic students, where the school's ranking drops considerably. This is an important area for improvement. The data also shows that higher spending does not automatically mean better results, as some of the top-performing schools spend less per student. Odle remains an excellent school, but its challenge is to ensure all student groups benefit equally from its high-quality education.

Open Quote Odle was once a successful school. Now, the grade averages are not even close to standard despite many measures taken by the administration to boost them. Odle was caught being manipulative of the PRISM program by not counting the PRISM students for student population counts determining average family salaries to earn Title One status, but still using PRISM as a tool to boost the grade average a little bit higher. Odle has also implemented a silly and ridiculous Success Initiative system intended to boost the grades since Odle has recently been forced to include PRISM in the population counts and cannot use Title One as an excuse for bad grades, and it gives the teachers despotic powers while student liberties are greatly diminished. Despite several student petitions and protests against the Success Initiative and what problems it poses, the administration has ignored them--and even the Success Initiative, which allows students to make up failed assignments for unlimited improvement (which means grades aren't an accurate assessment of a student's ability--rather they show how many redos a student was allowed) didn't raise grade averages to standard. Odle is failing miserably to maintain a healthy standing within the district and raise the kids to be successful students. Close Quote

Open Quote Odle was once a successful school. Now the lack of discipline overshadows any accomplishments and is affecting teacher morale. My wife teaches here and comes home disheartened, frustrated and upset about the lack of administrative support. There are many students with special needs, behavioral issues and poor attitudes about learning. Trying to deal with all these issues causes concerns for teachers who are trying to do the best they can. Can all these concerns be met and what is the BSD administration aware of the issues?
