Summary

Coventry Elementary is a K–5 elementary school in Yorktown, Virginia, serving 630 students in the York County Public Schools district, one of the highest-performing districts in the state. The school has a strong history — it ranked as high as 46th in Virginia (96th percentile) in 2018–19 — but has slipped in recent years to 171st (85th percentile) in 2025–26, its lowest sustained ranking in over a decade.

The most striking comparison is with its own neighbors. Tabb Elementary, just 0.67 miles away, ranks 61st in the state; Mount Vernon Elementary, 1.77 miles away, ranks 83rd; and Bethel Manor Elementary ranks 98th — all well ahead of Coventry. Perhaps most tellingly, Deer Park Elementary in the Newport News City Public Schools district ranks 60th and posts proficiency rates above 89% in every subject, even though it serves a student population with far higher poverty than Coventry's. Coventry's 4th-grade scores are a particular concern: math (83.87%), reading (85.37%), and Virginia Studies (80.83%) all fall below district averages, while 5th-grade scores remain strong (91.35% reading, 89.52% math).

Coventry has bright spots to build on. Hispanic students rank in the 96th percentile statewide, and low-income students perform at the 87th percentile, showing the school can deliver excellent outcomes for underserved populations. Chronic absenteeism has improved to 8.5%, far better than the state average of 14.8%, though Mount Vernon Elementary (5.2%) and Tabb Elementary (5.4%) do even better. The biggest challenge is support for disabled students, who rank in the 30th percentile statewide — a persistently weak area. With solid resources ($8,867 per student) and a favorable 15.3:1 student-teacher ratio, Coventry has the foundation to reverse its decline and reclaim its former 5-star status.
