Summary

Grafton High School is a comprehensive public high school in Yorktown, VA, serving 1,235 students in grades 9–12 as part of York County Public Schools. It sits in a district ranked 6th of 131 in Virginia, yet its own performance has slipped noticeably in recent years: Grafton fell from a 5-star, 10th-place state ranking in 2021–2022 to a 3-star, 109th-place ranking in 2025–2026. It now trails its York County neighbors Tabb High (40th), York High (76th), and York River Academy (42nd), making it the lowest-ranked comprehensive high school in the district.

Several factors set Grafton apart from its peers. Its free/reduced-price lunch rate is 44.2%, well above York High (30.1%) and Tabb High (21.8%). At the same time, Grafton spends the least per student ($8,498) and carries the highest student-teacher ratio (16.0) of any nearby high school, while serving a higher-need population. Chronic absenteeism is also elevated at 16.4%, nearly matching higher-poverty schools in Newport News City Public Schools and far above the York County district average of 10.1%.

Academically, Grafton still posts strong literacy and social studies scores, plus a 96.2% graduation rate and 0.9% dropout rate. However, Biology proficiency has plummeted from 81.2% (2022–2023) to 51.1% (2025–2026), and Algebra I scores lag district peers. Military-connected students show the weakest subgroup performance, ranking in the 44th percentile with a 2-star rating. The broad, across-the-board decline in the latest year suggests a systemic shift worth watching in 2026–2027.

Open Quote If your child enjoys full time harassment from fellow students and bullying in all capacities with no staff support this is an excellent choice. The academics are good if you don't mind having to physically defend yourself like a prison inmate. Close Quote

Open Quote Grafton provides a challenging academic environment and has dedicated teachers. There are numerous extra curricular activities for students to participate in. The student body is not huge so the kids have the opportunity to know each other. There is also a lot of school spirit.

Athletic teams are generally good to very good and the band is the largest on the Peninsula. I have one student in school now and one who went to Grafton for 4 years and is now in college. The college student was well prepared for higher level academics and with the credit received for AP courses will easily complete the requirements for a bachelors degree in 4 years. Close Quote
