Summary

Chancellor Middle in Fredericksburg, VA serves 799 students in grades 6–8 and is part of Spotsylvania County Public Schools. The school serves a high-poverty student population—about 72% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch—and its statewide ranking has slipped from the 40th percentile in 2020-21 to the 19th percentile today.

Chancellor has some clear bright spots. Advanced math students perform remarkably well: roughly 95–97% of 7th and 8th graders taking Algebra I and Geometry are proficient, matching or exceeding state averages. Eighth grade reading (70.3%) is also close to the state average and above the district average. However, grade-level math tells a different story. Only 31.7% of 7th graders and 35.8% of 8th graders are proficient in on-grade-level math, well below state averages of 51.1% and 46.9%. Seventh grade reading (56%) is also a concern, sitting 17 points below the state. Chronic absenteeism has improved from 37.9% in 2020-21 to 20%, but still affects one in five students.

Comparing Chancellor to nearby schools is revealing. Battlefield Middle, just over a mile away, serves a nearly identical student population (71% free/reduced lunch) but beats Chancellor in most subjects—7th grade reading is 68.4% vs. 56%, and 8th grade math is 46.5% vs. 35.8%. Freedom Middle has similar poverty (65%) and ranks in the 52nd percentile, with substantially stronger results in math and reading. Ni River Middle, four miles away, has much lower poverty (23%) and ranks in the 85th percentile. Spending at Chancellor has risen 47% since 2020-21 to $9,958 per student, and class sizes are relatively small (13 students per teacher), but these resources have not yet translated into higher rankings.

Open Quote There is a complete lack of communication from the Administration. Bullying and lack of discipline is unbelievable. The Vice Principal is fantastic but the Principal and New County Supervisor, oh my goodness, atrocious. She exudes complete arrogance and has little to no care for the students. The "Chancellor Chatter" newsletter looks like it has been using the same template for 15 years. I have seen a high turnover among teachers and some outright won't respond to you. Close Quote
